Plicare

Overview

“Plicare” is a game designed for Global Game Jam 2022, which theme is “Duality”. Plicare means “Fold” in Latin. The game takes place in a folded world. Character can travel between the past and the future of this world. Player needs to observe and take advantage of the differences between the past and future in this world to solve problems and eventually get the treasure.

The game is made by Purdue University Game Design major students Zhicong Lin (Bohemian) and Tansi Zhang (GameShiba).

 

Assets Purchased from Unreal Engine Marketplace: Movement Animset Pro by Kubold, POLYGON Adventure/FantasyCharacters/Nature by Synty Studio.

Fonts: DinkieBitmap Purchased from 3Type with individual authorization.

Audio: Background musics of level “Village” and “Dungeon” are made by Zhicong Lin. Other sounds are Purchased from aigei.com with individual authorization.

Gameplay

Control Scheme

Players can move left and right using the A/D keys and switch between the real world and the future world by pressing the Q/E keys. The Q key helps the player return to the real world, while the E key helps the player travel to the future world.

Level Design

Taking the tutorial level “Winter” as an example, the player initially wakes up in a dilapidated wooden cabin during winter, with the cabin door blocked by heavy snow. The player needs to press the E key to travel to spring when the ice and snow melt, and the cabin door is no longer blocked by snow, allowing the player to leave the cabin.

As the player continues forward, the melting ice and snow create a river that blocks their path. The player needs to press the Q key to return to winter, at which point the river freezes, allowing the player to walk across the ice to the other side.

Upon reaching the other side of the river, the player wants to rest by a bonfire, but due to the harsh cold wind, they are unable to start a fire successfully. The player needs to press the E key again to travel to spring, when the warm spring breeze enables the player to start a fire and rest.
